Lá Bealtaine

First of May and the day is grey,
but the birds still sing away.
The Roman Goddess Flora prepares the blossoms,
for the Gaelic Lá Bealtaine*.
The Sun’s adventure progresses midway –
between equinox and solstice.
Misfortunes unknown;
by the essence of culture.
United by cause,
alone we collapse.

– L.J. Lenehan –

*Lá Bealtaine an ancient Gaelic festival celebrated in Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man. It marked the beginning of summer and was linked to similar festivals held elsewhere in Europe, such as the Welsh Calan Mai and the Germanic Walpurgis Night.
